This is the beginning of a new life.

This is the holy grail of discovering your own identity. This is the only real moment you can honestly enter into relationship with others.

For from this personal strength and affirmation, from this inner confidence and self resourcing, you can for the first time make yourself available to others as you choose and allow others to draw close to you.

It's not because you need them, or are looking to gain from them or feed from them or steal their love, but because you are a complete person able to safely engage with others and bless them and be blessed by them.

STOP PROGRAMMING KIDS

Exam boards and schools should stop setting out to programme children as though they were machines.

Give me a happy contented fulfilled all rounded child any day rather than a pursued pressurised one, bearing a bag full of high grades.

A family should choose when it goes on holiday, not the state, not an exam board and not a school.

When will 'depressed' people learn that the greatest 'joint' on offer is the exhilaration of cherishing their children. 

I have worked in mental institutions and I have supported the severely depressed. My comment is not directed at those clinically identified to be at risk, hence in part the use of inverted commas. It is to those who coin a 'depressed' diagnosis all too easily and who jump to swallow, almost as a trophy, as many anti-depressants as the doc will provide or resort to drugs or alcohol instead of facing as adults the reality of life. The article states Gemma's  recent dependency was triggered by the loss of a boyfriend. Children are eternal jewels. Boy/girl friends come and go.

We need to rescue children from thoughtless parents who endanger their children's health by selfishly inflicting their smoke on them, in a confined space from which the children cannot escape.

STANDARDS OF DETENTION AT THE BEXLEYHEATH CUSTODY SUITE

ICV's discover regularly during our spot check visits that detainees have not been given food, or at times even drink. At times a detainee may not have drunk or eaten for the 24 hours of their detention.

At times they are cold without a blanket.

Their lights have not been dimmed to allow them to sleep overnight.

They are rarely given access to a wash basin and almost never a shower.

They may have been in 24 hours but not given access to the exercise yard or reading material.

They are often confused as to what is happening to them.

Juveniles receive largely the same treatment as adults, despite PACE directing special measures.

Detainees on regular medication are often denied access to their regular prescriptions.

Detainees with mental health or emotional issues are often left anxious and vulnerable in their cells.

Warnings are often given that requesting a solicitor may mean a delay in processing the detainee that acts as a deterrent to them asking to see one.

A leaflet about rights and entitlements, though given, is often left by the detainee at the front desk because of their stress at what is happening to them and the police do not ensure they take it into their cells with them.

Detainees are at times restrained even strip searched by force without any attempt to seek their compliance first.

Detainees are routinely handcuffed irrespective of the charge.

Custody staff say that they are too busy to be able to provide all the entitlements. However I have witnessed on a number of occasions custody staff playing games on their smart phones rather than ensuring the well being of detainees.

These are unacceptable standards for our custody suites in 2014.

POLICE MISLEAD ABOUT ELEVEN YEAR OLD'S DETENTION

The police claim that the eleven year old was 'in detention rooms specially designated for young people or vulnerable adults.' This is wholly misleading. When the police were asked at the ICV's meeting on Monday evening about whether the cell ,the eleven year old was kept in, was in anyway different to an adult cell, they agreed it wasn't..Treat an eleven year old in this manner and you will create a career criminal hostile to authority as well as being complicit in the abuse of a child.

The PACE rules, governing the treatment of juveniles in detention, were contravened as they regularly are in Bexleyheath custody.

At the same meeting, concern was expressed at how a juvenile had not been provided food.


The lack of provision of basic entitlements to detainees is an ongoing problem in Bexleyheath and despite years of pressure by the ICV panel upon the police to improve, there are still glaring omissions.

MODERN STATE SANCTIONED CHILD ABUSE

Safeguarding  officers, policies, practices, police checks, child protection units are everywhere.

However, in Bexleyheath Police Station on Thursday, behind the iron door of a bolted cell, in a small cold room, with no window was the small slight figure of an eleven year old boy.

'He's been picked up this morning and brought in with his brother for alleged theft.' I was told, 'He's ADHD. He's on medication for it. So is his brother. We've put them in different cells.'

When I entered the cell of the eleven year old, he looked pitiful and forlorn.

'Are you frightened?' I asked.

'I'm OK', he said, although his eyes and expression told a different story.

'I've been in a cell before,' he continued, 'you get used to it'.

'Do your Mum or Dad know your here?  I asked.

'I'm fostered.' he said.

Young people should not be placed in locked cells according to PACE. The police claim publicly that they are not. I find repeatedly that they are.

'It's budget cuts,' the police say, 'lack of staff and resources. We haven't any choice.'

So there you have it.

A diminutive eleven year old, diagnosed and drugged by society, taken from his family, in the care of the local authority,  farmed out to strangers, banged up in a cold police cell.

A clear example of child abuse. And no one is doing anything about it. Not a safeguarding officer in sight.

OUTRAGING PUBLIC DECENCY

Instead of the state persecuting Stephen Gough for his natural and harmless nudity, perhaps it should be attending to the fashion industry and the deliberate designing of clothes to draw attention to the sexual areas, to make a sexual statement and to provoke a sexual response. Even contaminating children's clothes in the same manner.

Perhaps the state should be concerned when a child passes a newspaper stand or opens the Sun or eats fish and chips on page 3 and is presented with commercially driven and sanctioned nudity.

Stephen Gough's nudity is stripped of such sexuality. It is innocent and poses deep and disturbing questions about the ignorance and hypocrisy of our prejudices that we visit randomly on others to their detriment.

It is a disgrace that the state should deprive his children of their father and even deprive them of their visiting rights to him in prison.

 Allow the man to present himself in society in the skin with which he was born. 

Adults and children alike see naked dogs, sheep, cows and horses, they see the genitalia of animals and pets, they can see a horse with a very large and long erect penis and see horses and other animals mating, but the state finds that a man walking naked and doing nothing sexually explicit, outrages public decency and so hounds him, incarcerates him and stretches the law to justify its inhuman treatment of him.

In God's name and humanity's name - leave the man alone.

The problem with churches is that they fragment God's world. Our species is capable of great good but it harbours too the potential for gross wrong. 

We should act swiftly to remove the anonymity of people's posts and thus ensure they remain accountable for what they write.

We are told that the parents are 'committed Christians', that the father is a reader at a church, known for its evangelical message and that the pupil that has tragically died attended a Church of England school.

I wonder how many times the parents, the preachers, the church and the Church of England school tackled the subject of drugs with Daniel.

It is too often the case that religion, with its head in the clouds, and its mission to divert its followers away from everyday life, becomes a deadly distraction that prevents a person from being able to handle the very real threats and opportunities that present themselves daily.

BEXLEY'S ABUSE OF CHILDREN

TO BEXLEY ADMISSIONS

I understand from the material to which you have referred that unless I provide you information about my son's schooling,  you can proceed down a paper trail of warnings, orders and even prosecution should you wish to waste Bexley's time and money instead of building enough grammar school places to accommodate grade A pupils and money to improve the cattle market alternatives on offer.

My son got 0.4% under the randomly set pass threshold and though a grade A student, instead of being offered a school gaining 100% GSCE grades, you offered him one gaining 37% instead.

My responsibility is, I understand, to inform you that my son attends school. I think it is apparent that our outrage at Bexley's abuse of my son would indicate that we take education seriously and in not wanting him to be further abused at Welling school would have made alternative provision within the law, which we have done.

I will be willing to meet your representatives at Magistrates Court in due course should you so wish, but it would be rather a waste of everyone's time, as when the court discovers my son attends school, I believe no offence will have been committed, unless you can advise me otherwise. It would on the other hand provide me with the opportunity to speak against Bexley's child abuse and advertise how its educational system is failing so many Bexley children.

I hope your department understands that some parents won't take quietly the distress your policy causes their children and I hope further that serious consideration is being given to local educational reform.

THE POLICE WANT TO CENSOR MY BLOG

I am worried that the the work of the ICV's is being politicised by the police.

The fact is that every ICV has their own personal opinions.

One of our ICV's has a son in the police force. One would assume this makes him biased towards the police. However, the police are not raising this as a concern.

I think the police are trying to exert a form of hidden censorship over the views and comments of the public. I blog and comment regularly as a public figure and my style is robust and hard hitting, covering a wide array of subjects. The requirement the police are raising, is that I need to curb my comments when dealing with police matters to ensure I don't appear biased or inclined against them. However, if they have acted inappropriately it is necessary to speak critically and to be being asked not to, appears concerning.

You stated that my work as an ICV has been appreciated, has brought about positive changes, has offered a new perspective and that looking at the record of my work, no bias is detected.

If my contribution as an ICV has been productive and there is no formal complaint about my work and no evidence to support a complaint, then I do not believe the managers or the police have an area of legitimate issue to act upon to dismiss me for expressing criticisms of the police.

I think it would be inappropriate for me to begin editing a site that has been in existence pre-dating my ICV appointment, www.whennooneswatching.org and inappropriate for me to edit a blog that carries my genuine reflections on past and current events. 

We live in a free society, where the one legitimate means of protest is the power of free speech which underpins democracy and ensures public accountability.

It would not be proper for me to submit to an attempt to stifle that liberty, particularly when coming from the very organisation, whose treatment of detainees, I have a public role in monitoring.

Removing me, because of such a pressure, is tantamount to demonstrating that the ICV system is a facility to appease the public, yet influenced and contained by the police.

EUTHANASIA

Society must permit people to make the best personal arrangements for their death, so they can die with dignity.

It is unacceptable that journeys have to be taken to Dignitas and that accompanying family members face the threat of prosecution. 

A person should be able to choose to die in their own home, or other chosen location, with the necessary drugs being made available to them. 

Compassion and respect for the suffering will achieve in time the necessary legislative change.

CHILD ABUSE BY THE RICH IS OVERLOOKED

The Social Services only classify 'abuse' as taking place in poor families.

 The abuse of sending children to creches, away to private school, on holidays with nannies, never being home for them because the parents have high flying careers and the kids are raised by the au pairs, pressurising them into music lessons, high exam grades, professional careers etc, surrounding them with smoke, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine and the deadening influence of wealth -

 - all this abuse is overlooked.
