TERRORIST THREAT? THE GREATEST THREAT COMES FROM THE GREED AND CORRUPTION OF OUR OWN
There could not be a more harrowing example, than the Grenfell Tower tragedy, of what happens when individuals prioritise themselves rather than the common good.
Our jaws will fall to the ground as revelation upon revelation is made about all the choices made by individuals, companies and authorities that led to this grotesque carnage.
Perhaps the intense focus there is about terrorism is useful to some to keep us distracted from the potent threats that exist all around us by those who opt for selfish gain rather than public service.
Unfortunately, though it isn't sexy to say so, perhaps that is our common malaise; the plague that threatens our existence. The prevailing culture exhorts egotism and panders to our appetites. The underlying narrative of all advertising, commerce, media, education and politics is get, gain, grab.
We become obese of body and mind, consuming without refection or restraint.
Every so often we throw up a sacrificial offering like Sir Philip Green and give the pretence of indignation, but it's all show boating. Once the headlines are over, the rich return to their play.
Appearance is everything in today's world. The cosmetic surgery and make-up plastered faces of Love Island's Barbie dolls and the muscular enhanced torsos of vain, looks obsessed men, that all 'appear' amazingly perfect, to concrete tower block monstrosities clad to look sweet to the affluent neighbours, to the media, public officials, religious leaders and even the prime minister who rush in, quick to say the right things, to appear terribly interested and promising that Tower block safety will be different. The truth is other.
The Love Island Barbie dolls wake up spotty and mottle skinned while the male hulks are shown to be prejudiced and predatory, all their 'beauty' fading quickly as they draw upon their cancer sticks. Tower blocks dressed in their Sunday best become death traps obliterating whole families, mainly the poor and ignored and the circus of officialdom and media that circle like vultures over the site of tragedy, are securing their income streams, their votes or are trying to avoid prosecution.
The world is going up in smoke, from the barricades at Calais, to the lorry bombs of Kabul, to the Tower block infernos around the world to the rain forests decimated for profit.
If we are to halt the present decline, it will take more than a full and proper investigation. A new world approach is required, based on unselfish compassion, equality and service.
