HUMAN BEINGS ARE SO SILLY SOMETIMES

Doctors dole out antibiotics, refer patients on to consultants and for further tests because the public want them to apparently.

We are so ridiculous, that when we attend the surgery we want to come away with a bag of pills, to have something to show for our visit and some report of diagnosis and required treatment to brag about to our friends.

It seems rare to find a human being who attends the surgery with a concern and skips down the road afterwards when nothing has been prescribed and no referral has been made.

Rarer still, that human being, who when offered the bag of pills or tests, declines because in their estimation it is not necessary or the aggro involved will be counter productive.

As a cleric, I am often incensed at hearing that a patient presenting with life's normal stresses has been given anti-depressants or a patient with cancer, has had their last taste of life destroyed by pointless chemotherapy treatments or a patient with a trivial ageing complaint has been whisked into surgery.

Doctors should not pander to our infantile dependency syndromes and we should not leave our brains at the door when visiting the doctor.

There is a pressing need to re balance the world's distribution of wealth and resources and to pursue more enlightened foreign policies that facilitate the establishment of peace.

SHERPA SLAVERY

The tragic earthquake in Nepal reveals the continued mockery the wealthy make of those they ravage. With their expensive climbing equipment and their international rescue resources on hand they frolic amidst the peaks, savour Nepalese culture and return to their lands of plenty while those who hosted them, bore for them, guided and enabled them, return too but to their very different worlds.

The rich being plucked to safety were red carpeted to embassies, Ghurka army camps, airports and awaiting salvation while the Nepalese shivered, hungry, drinking contaminated water and facing icy unsheltered nights.

The rich world's Disasters Emergency Committee that sprang into operation assuages the conscience of the spectators, but is doing nothing to address the real issues of continued and systemic inequality that maintain the region's oppression.

Climbers are even now planning to scale Everest again, trampling over the poor on their ascent.

It would be better if a more pressing mountain height was scaled, that of achieving a fairer world.
