102 years ago a baby girl was born in Hartington. Who could have foreseen, that a baby boy born in Scotland around the same time, would stop a night in that tiny Derbyshire hamlet, on war leave, and the two would fall in love and be married 3 weeks later. I was privileged to conduct the wedding of their daughter, under a walnut tree many years later. When the threads of gold spun by that Hartington baby and her beloved had reached their end in this life, having loved one another for 68 long and good years, I was asked to scatter their ashes into the crystal waters of the River Dove at Beresford Dale. This month, I returned again to scatter the ashes of another beloved family member. Moments of eternity, when the mysteries of our lives tug close that gossamer veil between earth and heaven, and we are stilled in awe, as nature folds close around, and the river of time continues on its incessant way and we are returned, as flakes of yesterday, into the womb of creation, from whence we came, in hope of what may lie beyond.
"I have just read your version of the so-called Gospel of John. I found it quite remarkable. I found it spoke to me in a way that all my reading of Scripture (quite extensive but abandoned as inaccurate, unreliable and even irrelevant) had never done before."
This family of 5 contacted me weeks ago, when they were fleeing Putin's war. There were two parents, a baby of 5 months, a 2 year old and a 4 year old. They needed help. They had gained visas to enter the U.K., but their Ukrainian relative couldn't accommodate them. Neither could we easily, as we were sponsoring another family of 5, although I said we would as well, if I couldn't arrange something else for them. The family were travelling by foot, bus and train and sleeping wherever there were refugee tents or centres, through Ukraine, Moldova and into Bulgaria. They were going to fly into Gatwick near midnight and ask the Red Cross to accommodate them. I spent many hours liaising with the Red Cross, Crawley Council, West Sussex Council and the emergency housing team and managed to arrange to have them met personally at Gatwick and provided with accommodation at the Gatwick Hilton over the weekend, until proper arrangements could be made for their future safety. I found this photo, the family sent me, so moving, of their youngest, safe on the soft white sheets of the hotel that first morning after they had arrived the night before. Other photos followed, of all the children and family, finding peace after their trauma. Later more photos, once the family had been moved to other safe accommodation, of the children playing in the local park, amidst the glorious greens of England's spring.
Its true beauty was in the love the couple had for each other and for their children.
Child 'marriage' is now banned by law in England and Wales thanks to this outstanding woman, who refused to be crushed by her own suffering and the horrific abuse and murder of her sister, and who campaigned to achieve protection for our children from those who would abuse them. Now children are a little safer. The one further step that must be taken to ensure their safety, is that it must become illegal for an adult (someone aged 18 and over) to have sex with a child (someone under 18). At the moment an adult of any age, 40, 50, 60 etc can have sex with a 16 year old child. At the moment an adult of any profession, teacher, doctor, priest, nurse, counsellor, social worker, police officer can have sex with a 16 year old child, (as long as they are not professionally responsible for them or involved with them). This is child abuse and must be made illegal. Congratulations to Payzee Mahmod and thanks to her for her wonderful work and achievement. Let us hope someone now leads a campaign to keep adults away sexually from our children, so that they can truly and safely enjoy an innocent childhood.
