BEWARE THE LIKES OF TOBY BELFIELD INVEIGLING THEIR WAY BACK INTO CHILDREN'S LIVES

All must be vigilant to protect children from adults who have shown themselves to be a risk. Congratulations to Ruthin School who have taken their safeguarding responsibilities seriously and have kept their eye on Belfield's activities. Hopefully we are entering a new era where adults work cooperatively, with integrity and proactively to ensure the safety of our children. There are so many paedophiles who try and fade into anonymity, re-invent and even rename themselves, and re-emerge to prey upon children. All adults bear a responsibility to check, double check and check again whether a person is bona fide or is concealing former acts of abuse against children. Adults are duplicitous, cunning and rarely trustworthy. Children's safety and well being can't be left to chance.

THE CORPSES OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND AND ST JOHN'S COLLEGE NOTTINGHAM

Recently I visited St John's College in Nottingham, where I did my post graduate theological training, having returned from my year in India. Then it was bustling with life and wielded considerable influence. Now it is closed, derelict and falling into disrepair.
It felt a potent symbol of the death of an institution in contrast to the life of the spirit. How deeply thankful I am that I managed to escape the clutches of the Church of England when I did, back in 1994. Reflecting back, had I not, I could have well now been gripped by its decaying remains. Instead, I have known life, joy and a continuing, expanding, spirit led, loving and innovative ministry, relevant to our age and accessible to all. The Church of England entrap their clergy, with pernicious perks, that appear to the young a great asset, but are in fact the mechanisms whereby their clergy feel incapable of breaking free. A house comes with the job; tax free heating, lighting and cleaning costs; private health care, non contributory pension, interest free loans for cars and other life items, as well as an income for life. It is sad to see those who once had light in their eyes and sincerity in their hearts, now snuffed out and washed up on the shores of cynicism, because the perks glued them to a corpse. My eyes still shine, my heart is brimming, my enthusiasm is undeterred and I am very much still alive and ministering fully.  Never choose the safe, well provided for choice, when the spirit of Love is beckoning, even though its path may appear perilous and uncertain. Step out upon the waters of unpredictability, in faithful response to Love's calling, and you will ever be enriched, fulfilled and enabled to be of service to others.

WE LED THE WAY........AND THE REST HAVE FOLLOWED

As a young priest, I stood for General Synod of the Church of England. My manifesto was simple, unconditional love and accessible ministry for all. I wanted the church to reach out to all faiths and all people, building bridges of love and respect between everyone. I supported women priests, interfaith prayers, weddings for divorced couples, gay weddings and personal funerals. I wasn't elected and the archdeacon blocked my initiatives. I went independent in 1994 and became the first priest to advertise my willingness to offer unconditionally loving ministry to all. Over the years this has meant me conducting weddings for divorced people and  marriages for gay and lesbian couples, weddings in any and every location, baptisms for single parents and non church goers, services in people's homes and of their choice and bespoke funerals celebrating the life of the bereaved rather than inflicting a stuffy, irrelevant service on the mourners. It also included launching Post The Host, a service offering people communion by post and over the internet. It has been astonishing and humbling to see all the things I have campaigned for passing into the mainstream. As though I was born before my time, something of a prophet, pointing to the direction that should be taken, and living a future reality before others arrived there, to help point the way and achieve the reforms necessary.

RISE UP THE RELENTLESS INTERROGATOR

I tire increasingly of political interviews on the radio or television for the opposite reason. It is rare, if ever, to hear a politician actually answer a question. Even when the listeners know what a candid answer would be, what the facts dictate and what the analysis shows clearly, the politician obfuscates, dodges and prevaricates. It undermines confidence in language, discourse and debate to aid understanding and guide us towards truth. If presenters are bullied into becoming quiescent in the face of drivel and self interested propaganda, we will continue on our present path into ever greater servility and conformity.

THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND HAS BECOME AN IRRELEVANCE

Wanting Anglican churches to be opened for funerals is hardly a campaigning issue, as so few families opt for a Church funeral, and health concerns should take priority. I remember attending a local clergy chapter meeting as a young priest, when an older priest commented on how outrageous it was for families to request secular music at a funeral. That was 40 years ago. In the intervening decades the Church of England has shown itself so out of touch with the real world and people's everyday lives and legitimate wishes, that it has increasingly become an irrelevance to the majority. Whereas once, most funerals were conducted by Anglican clergy, now it is the minority and only a tiny number opt to use the church itself. Instead loving and personal funerals are provided by numerous alternative providers, be they religious or secular. What is abundantly clear, is that the Church of England is no longer the spiritual home of the nation.

ONLY LOVING ONE ANOTHER MORE AFTER EIGHT WEEKS OF LOCK DOWN.

It is a total joy, after 8 weeks of lock down, punctuated for me alone when I have to venture out to take funerals, that we, as a family, only love each other more. You might expect, restricting two strong young men, one adolescent and two parents in a home would be a recipe for an explosion, fall outs, even bad temper or at least simmering discontent. Well, there has been none of it. The home pulses smoothly and happily, each generating their own activities, completing their own work loads, carrying out their own exercise regimes and collectively enjoying recreational happy times together, playing games, chatting, holding competitions, being creative and enjoying being close. It is something of an idyll. My beautiful wife is at the heart of the home, my songbird, bright and positive, blessing us all with her gentleness, energy, enthusiasm and her grace. Our children are remarkable in their affection and love for each other, even at their different ages and stages, rough and tumbling, teasing and playing happily together, while respecting each other's own pursuits and routines. Our youngest has been exemplary in fulfilling his on line school work and being a bundle of mischief and our eldest have been impressively motivated, completing their study assignments and dedicated to their body building. They are also brilliant at training their old Dad in how to lift weights properly, keep himself in trim, hone his table football skills and make sure they have updated his Spotify with their 'must listen to' rap songs. Every day we enjoy our evening meal together, round the table, as a family, happily sharing the days achievements, discussing the news and joking together and then have fun during the evening. These weeks of lock down could have proved to be a domestic nightmare, but they have been a rare blessing, providing us with a prolonged period of time together, when we have been able to cherish the love we share. My family are my world, my oasis and my life.

Our youngest wrote this about Covid-19:

Slowly spreading
Controlling things
Like a pilot in a plane
Or a seafarer on a ship
Getting orders from the head cell
Attack the lungs!
Go for the throat!
Try and weaken the heart!
Then in the end they realise
That they have killed
They cheer and scream with happiness
Bloodthirsty
For their next victim
But in the end
They are infected 
With their own virus 
Their sadistic actions

OUR SECOND MIRACLE - DOBONG RISES TOO AT EASTER

The second Gambian village for which we have provided funds for the installation of water, is nearing the completion of their project. The bore hole has been dug, the solar panels and pump installed, standpipes laid, livestock drinking troughs built and the last part, is the construction of the holding water tanks tower. Fresh water is already flowing and life is blossoming, thanks to all those whose immense generosity made this miracle come true for them.
