In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Through the Word all things were made; without the Word nothing was made that has been made.
In the Word was life, and that life was the light for all. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that all might believe. John was not the light but came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. The light was in the world, and though the world was made through the light, the world did not recognise the light. The light came to those who ought to have identified the light, but even they did not receive the light.
Yet all who did receive the light and those who believed in the light came to understand that they were children of God – children not born of natural descent, nor of human decision or a parent’s will, but born of the light.
The Word became flesh and made her and his dwelling among us. We have seen their glory, the glory of those who come from God, filled with grace and truth.
Meanwhile, at Nazareth, a town in Galilee, a young woman, Mary, who was engaged at the time to Joseph, was also overcome with emotion, when she realised that she was pregnant.
Hearing that her relative, Elizabeth, was also pregnant brought her some comfort and she went to visit her.
During their time together, she was able to feel Elizabeth’s baby moving and Elizabeth said to her, “Your child is going to bring you such blessing as well as being blessed.”
Mary sang,
“I am thankful for this gift of life within
me
I am blessed to be bearing a child
Love’s mercy is over all of creation
From generation to generation
Love performs mighty deeds
Love challenges the proud
Love removes the power from unjust rulers
Love lifts the humble
Love fills the hungry with good things
And the rich grow hungry
In pursuit of selfish choices”
Jesus was born in Bethlehem under a star filled sky, while Herod was the King. It was a time of political and social upheaval when atrocities were commonplace.
Many were influenced by religious fervour, dreams, and predictions. Some became convinced that there was something remarkable about Jesus and searched for him.
News of their interest and beliefs alarmed the authorities, as the crowds were easily stirred by wild notions.
Joseph and Mary were
worried that the situation was becoming volatile, and the attention being
focused on Jesus posed a significant threat to them all. They decided to leave
by night and journey to Egypt.
Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem to register in a census, that had been ordered by the ruling authority.
While there, Mary gave birth and laid her son in a feeding trough, among the animals, where they had been forced to stay, because no other accommodation was available.
News reached a group of shepherds that a baby had been born to a family who were sleeping in a stable. They were intrigued and went to see. Their hearts were moved at the sight of the child and his parents, in such a humble setting. They sensed that they had witnessed something remarkable and shared their experience widely.
Mary and Joseph named their son, Jesus.
