SECRECY PROTECTS THE STATE NOT VENABLES

Venables' crimes are execrable. However, the limbo state of secrecy into which the state has plunged him, on the pretext of his own 'protection', is nothing short of a licence to conceal every miserable failing of its catastrophic judicial system. The state took a deeply disturbed 10 year old child, and despite all its interventions, released a monster back into society. Who will be held to account? No one. What reforms will be introduced. None. Will any changes be made? No. Because secrecy protects the whole rotten lot. So much for our free, open and accountable society.
