POLICE WATCH DETAINEES DEFECATE AND WOMEN BLEED

Systems, rules and policies appear incapable of including common sense within them. There is always a risk that a human being may attempt suicide, especially after the brutal, degrading and dehumanising treatment meted out by the police to often entirely innocent members of the public. However, in the majority of cases, detainees are not going to swallow tampons or choke themselves on toilet paper and will endure their humiliation at the hands of the police with resolve and dignity. It is rational, logical and essential that the police reform their custody suite procedures to assess the suitability of a detainee to have personal access to sanitary products with the assurance that their use will not be viewable by the custody staff and that they will be able to use a toilet that isn't in an open corridor for all to see.  Those assessed to be at risk, ought still to be given dignified access, and private facilities, but in such a way that their safety is assured. However, the ICVA's call for such reforms is as disingenuous as their monitoring of the PACE rules. There is an ingrained culture within the police, with which the ICVA is complicit, only to provide detainees with their PACE rights or regulations, like dimmed night time lights, a call button, a phone call, reading material, writing material, knowledge of the time, access to a doctor or nurse, prescription medication, blankets, food, drink, wash facilities, exercise, children not placed in adult cells, vulnerable adults safeguarded etc, on request, rather than by routine and/or only if the budget or rota allows. The ICVA is as much a pet dog of the police, as the IPCC, and the proper treatment of detainees is unlikely, unless both bodies are transformed.
