WHEN TEACHING TURNS SOUR

Education has become industrialised, children commodified. Vocation and childhood have been subsumed into a target driven culture, preparing the human resources to maximise future profits. Against this expedience, poor performers or problem pupils end up in sink schools, whereas the brightest are pampered and indulgently processed. The truth that many schools end up as danger zones, patrolled by police, and parlous environments for teachers is suppressed. Our local school, St Thomas More, Bexleyheath, was transformed, when a new Head, vocationally motivated, created a caring, inclusive, child centred community, not driven by results, but the quality of humanity shared, in which the teachers and pupils were all inspired to give more and be more and so play their part in making the school a place of joy, friendship and learning.
