Governments throughout history target the poor, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged into joining up, tempting them with alluring perks and not mentioning they may well be slaughtered, maimed for life or severely traumatised and then abandoned without proper care and support, often ending up homeless and as street sleepers.
The wealthy encourage their offspring away from military service with the exception, if they are really inclined, of entering in the somewhat safer level of officer class.
We must put war behind us. It has no place in civilised society and yet our culture is riddled still with war talk and the 'honour' of dying for your country.
It is high time the young were not tricked into squandering their lives because of failed political approaches, pressure from the military and the armaments industry.
