O WEEP FOR HELMAND

Oh weep for the 447 British lives lost in Helmand.

Oh weep for the lives of the allied soldiers lost.

Oh weep for the innocent civilians lost.

Oh weep for the mutilated and the maimed.

Oh weep for the billions squandered on destruction rather than spent on schools and hospitals and infrastructure.

Oh weep an ocean of tears that it seems all will return to its former state when the troops have pulled out.

Oh weep for the folly that learns no lessons from past bloodshed and prepares to spill more.

Perhaps we must all drown in this oozing of our sorrow, as in a Noahic flood, that life may begin anew......
