'FOR SAMA' - A RIVETING MODERN DAY GOSPEL OF REDEMPTION

Waad Al-Kateab and Hamza Al-Kateab are both extraordinary human beings, and the film 'FOR SAMA' that covers their last five years in Aleppo is the most visceral, shocking, informative, devastating and inspiring footage I have ever watched, though I should say, more experienced, because the account engulfs you, overwhelms you and traumatises you.
We watched it together, the five of us, as a family.
Our family in solidarity with the families filmed.
I spent the film in tears.
I awoke this morning in tears.
I write this in tears.
There are no real words that can convey the complexities, catastrophe, inhumanity and horror contained within the film, but equally no words to capture the irrepressible, inspirational and inexplicable courage, compassion and resolve of Waad and Hamza and of those filmed, to cling to the best of humanity and to show, amid the insanity of our worst, what is pure, profound and incomparably beautiful about our existence.

IN 1997, WHEN I WAS ARRESTED FOR NAILING MY PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ON THE DOOR OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. WORDS ARE POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT CHALLENGE  CORRUPTION, CONFRONT THE WICKED AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD. JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE CALLED  TO COMMUNICATE HIS WORDS,  IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COST.

MY AMAZING SONS

Just back from taking a service and my amazing sons were working out in the garden



My 18 year old wrote this, as deputy head boy, for his school newsletter.

Hello, I hope everybody reading this is safe and healthy in these turbulent times. As you are aware, Covid-19 has halted the world and brought it to a standstill. It is responsible for heartache across our country, as well as the rest of the globe. Due to the world-wide pandemic and the immense changes imposed on everyone’s lives, it is a very easy time for mental health to deteriorate. Despite this, it is essential for us to consider our positions in a wider perspective. The nationwide lock down does not discriminate by wealth, colour or class, binding everyone to the same situation of house arrest. However,  living conditions do not share the same equality. The rich and famous are indulged in the privilege, hard-earned or not, of being confined to spacious living areas, whereas the worse-off, in deprived areas of London, may only have a single bedroom flat, between multiple family members. It is vital that we do not become submerged in the challenges of isolation and are considerate to those who find themselves in more severe and traumatic situations than us. This mindset can only be achieved by maintaining good mental health; therefore, I have ensured that my mind has been busy by regularly exercising, completing schoolwork set by teachers and preparing for my university course. With the help of our incredible National Health Service and our cooperation with the government's regulations, we can move past this tough time, to reach the light at the end of the tunnel.  However to achieve this, we must all keep moving and being positive! 

My 13 year old son's recent school report included these words:

He is a very sociable, caring and amiable young man with a lot to offer. He often is the first to join into group discussion on a wide range of topics. He willingly helps others and will stand up for what he believes to be right, an honourable thing to do. He makes intelligent comments and has a sense of morality and concern about the injustice in this world and is not afraid to voice his opinions. He is a good role model for the form, regularly giving his time for activities, as well as being a good support to his peer group when needed
