'ODD ONE OUT' - DON'T BLAME SOCIAL MEDIA -THE GUTTER PRESS HAVE ALWAYS TROLLED AND TWISTED

The media have jumped on the bandwagon of 'Odd One Out', talking of the perils of bullying on line and urging us towards a more compassionate, accepting attitude. However, there are two glaring problems with this trite approach. The first that the media constantly bully and troll the innocent. They take celebrities, or public figures or those recently come to national attention and decide one day to make them saints and the next devils. They play with their public image, excoriating them one day, eulogising them the next. They are not people but commodities to use as sport in the ruthless chase for profit. If social media is a place for bullying, it is only because the media leads the way. The second problem is that the documentary 'Odd One Out', far from reconnecting us to the ordinary and the everyday, in a tolerant, inclusive manner, instead presents the tragic story of poor Jesy, who has been so mangled by fame, that it seems she can't find her way back to herself. The very documentary tackling the issue of self acceptance presented a person so incapable of accepting herself that she wakes early to put her makeup on and gets back into bed, before her boyfriend stirs. So afflicted is Jesy, that even in the home of bereaved parents or in the self help group, she had to wear her mask. 'Odd One Out' ironically ended up encouraging the very obsessional preoccupation with appearance that it claimed it was resisting. Those who are calling for it to be shown in schools clearly don't realise just how manipulable they are by the cynical media.

IN 1997, WHEN I WAS ARRESTED FOR NAILING MY PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ON THE DOOR OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. WORDS ARE POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT CHALLENGE  CORRUPTION, CONFRONT THE WICKED AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD. JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE CALLED  TO COMMUNICATE HIS WORDS,  IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COST.
