WHEN ARROGANCE, HIGH HANDEDNESS AND THE "I'M GOD" ATTITUDE, IS DRESSED UP AS AN "HONEST MISTAKE"

Many will have witnessed a consultant's ward round, with juniors in tow, being instructed by the oracle of knowledge in their midst. The hierarchical nature of the medical profession is one of its greatest weaknesses, with the lowest ranks treated dismissively and the highest, revered and rarely contradicted. The aura surrounding consultants, engenders a fear, that prevents their decisions being contested, resisted or disobeyed. This exemplar is then replicated by each strata of the descending hierarchy, rolled out by junior doctors, nurses, midwives and other staff members, each lording it over their minions.  Patients have almost no power whatsoever to withstand this combined authoritarianism and the decisions made about them, vulnerable as they are in illness and lacking medical knowledge. Such absolute power corrupts and leads to treatment choices and actions that are not 'honest mistakes', but born of conceit, an unwillingness to listen and even petulance. Jeremy Hunt's approach will isolate medical practitioners further from being truly accountable and lead them to pose a considerable risk to the public.

IN 1997, WHEN I WAS ARRESTED FOR NAILING MY PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ON THE DOOR OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. WORDS ARE POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT CHALLENGE  CORRUPTION, CONFRONT THE WICKED AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD. JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE CALLED  TO COMMUNICATE HIS WORDS,  IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COST.
