Well might she feel not a qualm about throwing harsher punishments at the most disturbed and destroyed children in society, issuing from very different backgrounds to her own. To her, they are just detritus to be removed from her neat swept life. Instead of further abusing them, provoking them and ensuring they remain entrenched in their offending, we need to recognise that the judicial process is clearly counter productive and results in the opposite of its claim. Rather than making society safer, it actually eggs up the peril. Cressida Dick's indulged fantasies of good citizens emerging from prison is empirical nonsense. Society must be bold in approaching offending from a totally new perspective. For instance, calculating the cost of a sentence, running often into hundreds of thousands of pounds and using that money instead to rehabilitate the offender and improving their circumstances.
