It chokes me when I read, even though it be qualified by inverted commas, that horrific word 'honour' associated with such barbaric acts.
The subjugation of women in the name of religion, culture and tradition is abhorrent.
Yet, thoughout the U.K. it is rife.
From FGM, to segregated education, to separate worshipping areas, to arranged or forced marriages, to required concealing modes of attire, to pay differentials, to job inequalities, to domestic chores, to child care practices, to sex trafficking, to rape and violence, women are repeatedly threatened, restricted, de-humanised and discriminated against.
It is shocking, unacceptable and must be stopped.
It arises from an approach that commodifies women. Men believe they have the right, most wickedly that God has given them the right, to own, command, rule over and control women. They say that women have to abide by certain roles, functions and rules and that they are the enforcers.
We must rid ourselves, our nation and our world of this evil.
