THE TOXIC BIBLE

Much of the bible is toxic and is so unsuitable that no child should be given a bible or allowed to read it without supervision. If we are trying to work towards an eclectic and peaceful world, should we not resign to history a book, which is so compromised by stories of bloodshed, immorality and conquest?
Unfortunately, our cultural bias renders us affectionately disposed to the book and able to overlook its flaws. We accommodate in Christianity what we would find offensive in the holy book of another faith. The perception of some faiths as warmongering and aggressive must include Christianity. Our children need to be protected.
We must be brave in applying the knowledge and insights of the modern age to remove even seminal literary sources if they have the power to distort. Images of a male God pursuing his enemies and requiring unquestioning subservience within a hierarchical world of kings and male rulers and clerics who must also be obeyed and in which women are ruled and owned are reactionary.
Images of religious fervour that take precedence over family relationships and loyalty and even laud the betrayal and killing of family members are repulsive. Images of illness, death, perils and the power of nature being met with miracles are confusing and endangering. Images of favouritism, elitism, hatred, destruction and vengeance are potent contaminants in establishing a better world.
