ANGLICANS WORSHIP IN CHURCHES BUILT BY MURDER AND SLAVERY AND STILL HONOUR THE CRIMINALS INVOLVED

Anglicans worship in churches built by murder and slavery and still have memorials honouring the criminals involved. When parliament voted compensation in 1833 - to former slave owners rather than the slaves themselves - the church received £8,823 8s 9d, about £500,000 in today's money, for the loss of slave labour on its Codrington plantation in Barbados. The contemporary Bishop of Exeter and his business associates received even more, nearly £13,000.

96 Church of England clergymen were involved in the claims for compensation, amounting to £46 million in today’s money, while the construction of 32 churches is linked to the claimants.

Bishops in the House of Lords voted against the abolition of the slave trade.

Welby hesitated at the idea they should all be removed, but offered the sop that some may be taken down. However, the logic of his previous statements in the interview, about the need for justice and repentance before forgiveness, would require all the statues to go, as the injustices and prevarications that underpinned slavery, are as prevalent today in the Anglican church and wider society, as they were then.

I AM PROUD OF MY WRITING, FOR JESUS’S SAKE, THAT HAS HAD ME FOUND INNOCENT IN HEAVEN, BUT TWICE A CRIMINAL ON THE EARTH. THE FIRST IN 1990 WHEN I WROTE A BIBLICAL TEXT ON THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT IN PEACEFUL PROTEST ABOUT THE BOMBING OF YOUNG IRAQI RECRUITS DURING THE FIRST GULF WAR. THE SECOND, IN 2016 WHEN I WROTE ON MY BLOG, TO ALERT THE PUBLIC ABOUT A PAEDOPHILE, AND WAS SUCCESSFUL IN FORCING THE AUTHORITIES TO STOP HIM HAVING ACCESS TO CHILDREN. THERE WAS ALMOST A THIRD! IN 1997, WHEN I WAS ARRESTED FOR NAILING MY PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ON THE DOOR OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. WORDS ARE POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT CHALLENGE  CORRUPTION, CONFRONT THE WICKED AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD. JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE CALLED  TO COMMUNICATE HIS WORDS,  IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COST.
