GRAFFITI - THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORDER AND FREEDOM

Grieving families, warm tributes and a sense of heroes, lost to the cause, express one side of what appears to be a bitter divide. On the other, citizens railing with ugly language about those killed and their inexcusable pursuit, even in the presence of their demise. There will always be an inevitable tension between those controlling and ordering and those spontaneous and unpredictable. The strange truth remains, that both sides need each other and should learn to be friends not enemies. Gratitude should be the bedrock of our society, for all those whose attention to detail, endeavour and industry has created a national life that is the envy of the world, in which social order, architectural wonder and electronic know how have kept us at the forefront of our emerging world. Gratitude also should be afforded to those who, like atoms, can't readily be corralled or directed, who have their own diffuse energy - sometimes genius, sometimes mischievous, sometimes malign, but always that pose questions, disturb and surprise, and act like yeast, providing a catalytic element to our national life. It is worth, in the presence of the new, the irritating and the down right outrageous, to hold back on one's initial anger, to consider the possible benefits of this other world. Banksy provides a good example of the best that graffiti art can offer.

I AM PROUD OF MY WRITING, FOR JESUS’S SAKE, THAT HAS HAD ME FOUND INNOCENT IN HEAVEN, BUT TWICE A CRIMINAL ON THE EARTH. THE FIRST IN 1990 WHEN I WROTE A BIBLICAL TEXT ON THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT IN PEACEFUL PROTEST ABOUT THE BOMBING OF YOUNG IRAQI RECRUITS DURING THE FIRST GULF WAR. THE SECOND, IN 2016 WHEN I WROTE ON MY BLOG, TO ALERT THE PUBLIC ABOUT A PAEDOPHILE, AND WAS SUCCESSFUL IN FORCING THE AUTHORITIES TO STOP HIM HAVING ACCESS TO CHILDREN. THERE WAS ALMOST A THIRD! IN 1997, WHEN I WAS ARRESTED FOR NAILING MY PROPOSALS FOR REFORM OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ON THE DOOR OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. WORDS ARE POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT CHALLENGE  CORRUPTION, CONFRONT THE WICKED AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD. JESUS IS THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS FOLLOWERS ARE CALLED  TO COMMUNICATE HIS WORDS,  IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COST.
