Jimmy Savile demonstrated certain traits that are common
among skilled paedophiles that it is vital for the public to appreciate.
They believe in themselves and their right to abuse.
They are highly manipulative.
They enjoy deceiving people.
They are adept at knowing what to say and how to say it, to
gain the response they want.
They are arrogant, self satisfied and grow ever more
confident, the more who fall prey to their devices.
Like Savile, in the end, playing the public becomes a sort
of sick sport.
And the more they can bring on side, the more they can taunt
their victims, laughing at their inability to do a thing about it, burying them
into silence and further humiliation.
For the Savile's of this world, who carve out for themselves
a false public persona, children are there for the taking, at their whim and
fancy.
However, for the paedophile that I helped manage to stop,
there is a crucial difference.
Because of what I and others managed to achieve, he is not
working with children. He will never work with children.
However, he may encounter children along life's way. That is
a great worry, particularly for parents who may unwittingly allow him to have
contacts with their children, unaware that he is an abuser.
I cannot name him or identify him because there are, at the
moment, unjustly and wrongly, reporting restrictions.
So it is important to enable the public to be able to
protect their children. An important first step is that they need to understand
the way child protection structures work.
Often, with paedophiles, there is insufficient evidence to
gain convictions through the courts, not least because of the desperate vulnerability of the victims and because of the highly complex, brutal, unpredictable and flawed nature of criminal proceedings.
However, if there is sufficient evidence held by the
authorities, often from numerous sources and involving numerous children, that
an individual has abused children, then a decision can be taken, never to allow
that person to work with children again. It is a statutory decision that is not
published, nor any of the evidence that has led to it being taken. That means
that the public are completely unaware of it and the paedophiles never have to
admit to it. There are many such individuals at large, banned from working with
children. They are free to explore any career paths that don't involve
children.
The ban on them working with children is only revealed if
they try to do so. Organisations working with children must ask for an enhanced
DBS certificate, when the ban is highlighted. Knowing this, paedophiles make sure they pursue career paths that don't involve children and no-one need ever
be the wiser about what the authorities know about them.
Parents need to be on their guard therefore, highly vigilant
for indirect clues and indicators that a person may in fact be under a ban. If
one looks carefully at situations, they are not too hard to find, but you have
to be looking and you have to understand the way that the systems and
paedophiles work.
Regarding the paedophile I helped stop, we are watching him
like a hawk.
He knows that reporting restrictions have provided him, at
the moment, with anonymity and a certain immunity.
However, if he should ever try to work with children again,
or if we discover he has inveigled his way into the company of children again,
the court has explained to me how I can immediately take action to protect them
from him.
It's only by working together that we can protect our
children.
Keep aware. Don't be fooled. Stay on guard. Look out for
those hidden clues and keep your children safe.
