YUSRA HUSSIEN, 15, INFECTED WITH THE RELIGION VIRUS TRAVELS TO SYRIA

This arises when traditional Islamic culture attempts to co-exist with modern Western values. Its view and practice of the patriarchal nature of Islam,  the uniqueness and exclusivity of its core beliefs, its gender role modelling, and its unwillingness to engage in rational debate about such matters within families and in society, creates immense communal, domestic and personal tensions, from which siblings deciding to travel to Syria can emerge. Other faiths, including Christianity exhibit similar issues.
The present crisis is a fundamental clash between secularism and religion. Enlightened societies must proceed to resign religion to history, to remove it from all public life, to protect children from it and to launch a health educational programme alerting the public to the dangers of religious indoctrination. Religious literature should carry a warning, proselytism and all religious advertising and broadcasting should be banned. 
Accommodating what humans claim to be about 'God' in modern society allows a volatile, toxic and devastating force to be at work among us leading us to destruction.
