The strange irony is that modern society spawns multiple mating and cohabitation patterns. Polygamy and polyandry are practised regularly and informally throughout society by those of every background. Whether in shared living, communes or most often, in promiscuity, affairs and through prostitution. The presentation of this issue bears an implicit racism, in that it targets a particular community without contextualising and comparing it against the whole. What happens re polygamy within Muslim communities may at its worst, be oppressive and exploitative, while at its best, may be inclusive and responsible. It can hardly be argued that promiscuity, affairs or prostitution fare better. We are afraid to be honest about our sexuality and relationships and so public discussion of the same is often contrived and distorted. Perhaps an inclusive society ought to permit polygamy and polyandry and to evolve legal recognition and the commensurate protection for the various patterns that are practiced.
"You brave, courageous and wonderful man.
To stand up for the truth in the face of suppression and oppression
is truly an act of a pure heart."
